FRIEND – Men’s Apparel on Magazine

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Say hello to FRIEND, the newest addition to Magazine Street, offering the latest in casual men’s apparel.

We stopped by FRIEND to see owner Parker Hutchinson, who recently moved back to New Orleans from New York City to begin his venture into retail. Parker brought back with him casual, laid back styles for men looking for relaxed, everyday wear.

You immediately feel at ease in his simple, clean space, with the white walls, large wooden counter tops and the weathered concrete floor. The full glass window front lets in a lot of light, giving FRIEND a healthy energy for your shopping pleasure.

FRIEND carries the latest from Saturdays Serf NYC, Armor Lux, Stevedorf, Burkman Bros, Shades of Grey – all your essentials for leisure wear. Also check out the musky scented candles, cologne, and La Colombre whole beans (mmm coffee).

And ladies, if you’re still looking for a perfect Valentine’s Day Gift, stop by this weekend and pick up an ethically sourced deer antler bottle opener or key chain from 18 Waits.

So unwind, take it easy, and pick out something great from this up-and-coming store. Check out FRIEND on Facebook and Twitter.

The Giving Keys

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Image via nicholaslandry.tumblr.com

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind gift for yourself, a friend, or most importantly, someone who is in need of a little inspiration and optimism, look no further.

We introduce to you The Giving Keys, a unique product charity started by Caitlin Crosby, an actress, singer, and songwriter.

Caitlin began The Giving Keys with a simple hotel key, which she started wearing on a chain as a necklace. She later got the word LOVE engraved onto the keys, and after receiving countless compliment, realized the potential of these keys and the power they hold. Caitlin laments, “I was beginning to realize that we are all like keys: unique, flawed, scarred, and at risk of being discarded. I asked them to find and wear a key that would remind them that they are one-of-a-kind.”

The keys are assembled and engraved by members of the homeless in Los Angeles, and the proceeds go towards halfway houses and homeless shelters, helping them get on their feet and providing them with income.

The message of the giving keys it to PAY IT FORWARD. You wear the key for as long as it serves a purpose to you, and then you are supposed to pass it on to someone in need of the message it carries. For example, if your key reads INSPIRE, you pass it on to someone who inspires you or is in need of inspiration. And the cycle continues.

You can purchase your Giving Key for $30, with a personalized 8-character message. Chain and chord options range from silver or gold to black leather or brown suede. Free shipping on all orders within the US.

Continue the cycle, make a difference, and spread the word.

Fancy Pony Land, Andrea Loest and Amanda deLeon Trunk Show at Mallory Page Gallery

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Fancy Pony Land, Andrea Loest and Amanda deLeon Trunk Show will take place Saturday, December 10 from 2 to 8pm at Mallory Page Gallery: 614 Julia Street.

Fancy Pony Land, Andrea Loest and Amanda deLeon will each be present with pieces from their collections.

Fancy Pony Land will be showing a range of skirts, dresses and tops, as well as couture pieces in the “bandage” style for which the line has become known. To make each one-of-a-kind dress, tissue-thin Indian cotton voile is torn in strips, cut in pieces and stitched into round rosettes, which are then hand-draped on the dress form and assembled. We will also show a selection of winter wool jersey Color Block tops and assorted accessories and appliqued pieces

Andrea Loest will be showing a selection of holiday dresses and jackets from her fall and winter collection.  She will also have a special selection of garments from her latest spring 2012 collection, shown during NOLA Fashion Week SS’12, that featured her conceptual garment system Fair Fit. These garments are customizable in terms of color, cut, shape, and material. At the show, Andrea can take orders for individualized custom made pieces.

Amanda deLeon will be showing samples from her previous collections as well as some studio pieces for the holidays.  As a fashion designer, Amanda deLeon’s mission is to engineer clothing that breaks the boundaries of traditional beauty. Due to her architectural background, deLeon’s designs are structural in nature. Her pieces have precise detailing, but remain feminine and fun to wear. deLeon’s goal is to give women confidence in finding their own way to express their point of views about design, art and life.
